We are pleased to announce the addition of a fourth wine to our growing list. In keeping with our tradition of honoring the breathtaking grandeur of Oregon's Pacific Coast, our new wine is named for Grumsby Wayside, a majestic picnic area just off of Highway 101.
With its two stately picnic tables dating from the mid-70s (originally wood but replaced a few years ago with recycled plastic ones), Grumsby Wayside is the perfect place to pull off the highway, peer at the ocean, perhaps tie a shoe, and — strictly for the adventurous — to brave the lawn and set out for a bracing Pacific picnic. What more inspiring location could there be to name a wine for?
And what a wine it is! The varietal, Pinot Vert, is an Oregon coast specialty only recently discovered (just a week ago Tuesday, in fact). It is a spontaneous hybrid of the hitherto more popular Pinot Noir, and the Salal berry, which is still quite rare in winemaking. We have been fortunate in acquiring excellent Pinot Vert growing in the well-draining crumbled asphalt along the shoulder of Highway 101.
In the Grumsby Wayside 2009, this novel fruit imparts a vaguely myrtle-like flavor, with undertones of acacia and just a hint of daffodil on the nose. Kelp notes characterize a disconcertingly long finish. Pair Grumsby Wayside with oolichan (bear fat) or walrus carpaccio.
We hope you'll join us in popping the cap off a bottle of Grumsby Wayside 2009 and toasting the season with a boisterous "April Fools'!"
Drink between now and Monday. Store bottles safely away from open flames.
All kidding aside, we really are excited about having been chosen for the 2009 Portland Indie Wine Festival, Friday & Saturday, May 1-2. Festival judges have selected both Roads End and Cape Lookout for inclusion in this important Oregon wine event.
